    • From Jami Wetlaufer 3-27-2005: I just found my great-grampa George in the 1900 census, in Deadwood, South Dakota. 1891 was when his parents William and Lucinda, and younger brother Alvah, moved to Wisconsin, where William died in 1892. Brother Arthur later moved to Wisconsin as well. I don't know if George ever lived in Wisconsin before the 1930s, but by 1900 he was already working as a travelling salesman, and living with his cousin Samuel Brown in Deadwood!!

I was soooo excited to find out that George was living so far away from home with a cousin, and cousin Samuel's wife Elta and son Grant! The Browns were from Michigan. Samuel's mother was Olivia Silsbury, Lucinda's sister. The family obviously stayed close, despite living in different states (Michigan and Illinois) for years. Isn't that lovely? Samuel was a butcher in 1900.

In 1906, George married Olga Kirckhoff, and by 1910 lived on a farm with her family near Rapid City. George was still working as a travelling salesman at this time. Samuel, Elta and Grant had already moved on to Omaha, Nebraska by 1910, and Samuel worked as a Salesman for a Packing House.

I always wondered about George's early years in South Dakota, and wondered if he wasn't lonely to move there all by himself - so I'm altogether very pleased to know this bit more about his family and life there.

Database: Spanish American War: Astor Battery

Astor's Battery (Spanish American War) was an Artillery detachment of the Regular Army organized by the authority of the Secretary of War on May 26, 1898. The funds for support of the Astor Battery were presented to the U. S. by John Jacob Astor IV. Assigned to the battery were three Regular Army officers and a complement of men who were enlisted in the Regular Army for a period of three years. The Battery fought in the Philippines. When the battery was mustered out in February 1899, the men not entitled to discharge were transferred to artillery regiments. The above paragraph was extracted from the introductory remarks on the film which were written by Maizie H. Johnson and other sources.
