    • The Toronto Emigrant Office created registers of new immigrants who were assisted by the government to travel to many different destinations across southern Ontario. One record in the TEO archives may be that for Joseph and Robert Howe who, according to census records, immigrated to Canada in 1881. The TEO record shows that 2 Irish male adults -- "J. Howe and R. Howe" --immigrated to Quebec aboard the Moravian. They applied for assistance on Aug 16 1881. Their destination was Hamilton and they apparently traveled by the Great Western Railway railway.

      Robert Howe's Obituary

      What I Know:

Robert Howe is the son of Oliver & Jane HOWE of County Fermanagh, N. Ireland. He was likely born in the 1850s. In 1881 Robert and two brothers, Oliver and Joseph, immigrated to Canada. Joseph & Oliver settled in Walsingham Township, Norfolk.

According to letters written by the brothers to their sister, Mary (Howe) Hayden, in New Yok, Robert was married and had two children by prior to 1888. The family was living in London.

In a letter from Robert dated 1889, he lists his address as "Masonville" and also refers to his wife, "Emma."

I've learned from a relative that Robert sold at least part of his land for the building of the London Airport.

Robert died before 1937 according to the obituary of his brother, Joseph.

      POSSIBLE LEADS:

      OCFA
I've requested information from the OCFA and there is one record that "seems" promising but I'd need additional information to be sure. A record for the Mt Pleasant Cemetery shows a "Robert and Emily Howe." The birth and death dates for Robert seem pretty close: b. 1855 and d. 1931. Children include Ethel (1883-1966) and Edith (1897-1967).

1901 CANADIAN CENSUS - LONDON TOWNSHIP, MIDDLESEX CTY
A "Robert & Emma" are listed with children Ethel, Edith and John. Robert's date of birth is shown as 1853 in Ireland. And an immigration date of 1881 is listed. All matches.

From London Township, Vol. II P. 141 - the GARD Family:
In 1907 Frederick C. "Fred" (1877-1946) married Ethel Marie Howe, daughter of Robert Howe and Emily Shaw, and had 4 children: Edith Gladys, George Frederick, Helen Rosabell, and John Robert.

      ************************************************************************** **************************************************************************

There is no record of Robert?us birth among the Church records provided by Reverend Maurice Armstrong of St. Margaret?us Rectory, Parishes of Tempo and Clabby. However, the 1901 Canadian Census shows 47 year-old Robert as having been born 3 AUG 1853. The census suggests that Roberts wife, Emma, was born in rural Ontario. Therefore, Robert and Emma probably married after 1881 when he apparently immigrated to Canada. This information is supported by evidence from the collection of letters. In a letter from Joseph Howe (22 November 1887, Port Royal), he speaks of Robert visiting two months earlier. Also, in 1887 while Robert's sister Mary knew he was living in Canada, she was unaware if her brother was married:

"Well you wanted to know if Robert was morret [married]. He is. He is long ago and the [they] have 2 children. I don?ut here from him very often. He lives at London." (Oliver Howe, April 15, 1888, Port Royal)

Only one letter from Robert himself exists within the collection, dated 22 July 1889 from Masonville. In it he describes how he and his wife Emma milk cows.

"Emma she is not very well. She has to work very hard know in the summer as we try to do the most of the work our selves. She milkes 6 cows every night now when I am so busy. I have learned to milk since I came to this country. I can milk a cow in 5 minutes. Our cows paid us well last year. We got a chance to sell the most of the milk to a man that peddles it around town. He came to the house for it and paid us 3 cents a quart for it but we have to make butter of some of it this year and send some to the chees factory and butter is only 15 cents a pound here this summer. I ofter wonder how you get along for milk in the city if your children is as fond of it as ours are. It would cost a lot to buy it for them in the town."

** It appears that the year of birth for Ethel and John was recorded incorrectly. It they were 17 and 15 years old, their years of birth would be 1884 and 1886, not 1873 and 1875.

In July 2002 I contacted the London & Middlesex County Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society in hopes of obtaining copies of the interment records for Robert Howe. Several "Robert Howe's" were listed in the Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid (OCFA), so I focused on the records for cemeteries near London, Ontario in Middlesex County. Two records exist for Middlesex County. Perhaps "Emily Shaw" is Robert's "Emma?"

      ***** CRUMLIN, Ontario ************************************************************************** ****
-- Crumlin used to be a small settlement outside of the city of London. Over the years, it has been amalgomated into the city and thus does not exist. It was at the North East end of the City of London. The airport used to be called Crumlin Airport, years ago.

-- According to "Place Names in Ontario" by Alan Rayburn, Crumlin is located in the city of London, 10 km east of the city centre.

-- You're bang on with your research and i'm thrilled to have an answer for a question. What is now London International Airport was, in fact, first known as Crumlin Airport. It lies at the eastern
(northeastern) part of the city of London. If you locate the interactive map of the city of London, the airport lies at the extreme east end of Oxford Street -- The north-south road immediately west
of the airport has traditionally been 'Crumlin Side Road'.

The C.D. Howe Institute has its origins in the Private Planning Association of Canada (PPAC), which was formed in 1958 by business and labour leaders to undertake research and educational activities on economic policy issues. In 1973, the PPAC merged with the C.D. Howe Memorial Foundation to become the C.D. Howe Research Institute (HRI). The Foundation had been created in 1961 to memorialize the late Rt. Hon. Clarence Decatur Howe, who served Canada as Minister of Trade and Commerce, among other elected capacities, between 1935 and 1957. In 1981, HRI was dissolved, the Foundation again became a separate entity and the reconstituted PPAC was renamed the C.D. Howe Institute.

From 1913-1916, during which time Howe was the chief engineer for the Board of Grain Commissioners, he resided at Fort William (now Thunder Bay), Ontario.
